Motor Carriers
The International Registration Plan (IRP) is an agreement among states of the United States, the District of Columbia and provinces of Canada providing for payment of registration fees. For motor carriers operating under the IRP, registering a fleet of vehicles becomes a one-stop process, with a simple, one-step registration. Vehicles can then operate in multiple states or provinces after registration in their base state or province. Watch the IRP Carrier Training Video on Record Keeping for more information on IRP.
Whom do I contact?
For information on registering your vehicle with IRP apportioned license plates you should contact your base jurisdiction (state or province) for specific information and requirements. Contact information for each IRP jurisdiction can be found in the IRP Directory.
How do I determine my base jurisdiction?
Base jurisdiction is the state or province where the registrant has an established place of business as defined in the International Registration Plan. If you are unsure what jurisdiction you should be based in, please refer to the Section 305 found on page 27 of the Plan .
What will my IRP registration cost?
You may obtain an estimate using the IRP Fee Estimator. In order to determine exact cost you must apply to your base jurisdiction directly.
What about fuel taxes?
Inter-jurisdictional fuel tax licenses and quarterly reporting is handling through the International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA).
