Change of Due Date for Form 2290 (HVUT)

Monday, July 18, 2011
Today the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) issued a notice advising truckers and other owners of heavy highway vehicles that the due date for their next federal highway use tax return (Form 2290) has been changed from Aug. 31, 2011 to Nov. 30, 2011. This extension is designed to alleviate any confusion and possible multiple filings that could result if Congress reinstates or modifies the highway use tax after Sept. 30, 2011, when it is scheduled to expire. The Nov. 30 filing deadline for Form 2290 (Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax Return) for the tax period that began on July 1, 2011 applies to vehicles used during July, as well as those first used during August or September. Returns should not be filed and payments should not be made prior to Nov. 1.

Additional information on the state requirements with respect to proof of payment is included in a communication from the IRS and on the IRS website. IRP, Inc. will distribute more information and updates as they become available.

Please contact Tim Adams, Motor Carrier Services Program Director, IRP, Inc. at (502) 845-0398 if you have any questions.
